Stephen Kleene’s work in mathematical logic helped to form the foundation of theoretical computer science. In 1990, he was awarded the National Medal of Science “For his leadership in the theory of recursion and effective computability and for developing it into a deep and broad field of mathematical research.”

He spent most of his career, 1935 to 1978, in in the mathematics department at the University of Wisconsin – Madison.
