Scientist Profile

William Beaumont

Surgeon and Physiologist
11/21/1785 – 4/25/1853
Key Achievement
Dr. Beaumont studied human digestion by observing a patient who had incompletely healed from an injury, leaving a healed “window” opening that exposed the interior of his stomach.

The patient was very grateful that Dr. Beaumont had helped him to survive an extremely serious injury. He permitted study and experimentation in exchange for compensation. The injury occurred in June of 1822. The experimentation and study was carried out between during the summer of 1825 and again between late 1829 and early 1831. Dr. Beaumont published the results in 1833.

Connection to Wisconsin
Dr. Beaumont carried out his experiments during the time that he was stationed at Fort Howard at Green Bay, Wisconsin and Fort Crawford at Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin.
